New-York Historical Society’s Recipe of the Week: Clove Cake

Enjoy a new, very old recipe from the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library’s Duane Family cookbook collection (1840–1874). This week’s recipe is a clove-spiced cake. (Note: The page also includes recipes for cookies, soda biscuit, and ginger crackers.)

Clove Cake

3 lbs of flour
1 of sugar
1 of butter
3 eggs
1 pt (or less) of molasses
2 spoonfulls of cloves, or a teaspoon of ginger
