Details: On August 27, 1776, on the marshy fields of Gowanus and Red Hook, George Washington and his rag-tag troop of untrained soldiers were ingloriously defeated by the Royal Army. Explore the infamous battle that both threatened and abetted the outcome of the war for American independence.

Valerie Paley is vice president, chief historian, and dean of scholarly programs at the New-York Historical Society and director of the Museum’s Center for Women’s History. She is a co-curator of The Battle of Brooklyn.
