Details: Brian Phillips Murphy, Associate Professor, Baruch College, CUNY, will talk about his work on Building the Empire State: Political Economy in the Early Republic (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2015). Focusing on onetime mercantile colony New York state – home to the first American banks, utilities, canals and transportation infrastructure projects – Murphy follows collaborations between political leaders, entrepreneurs including Robert Livingston & Alexander Hamilton, showing how capitalism grew out of these converging political and economic interests.
