Details: Re-opening after two years, the Chintz Room – formerly known as the Nelly Custis Bedchamber – will once be the finest bedchamber on the second floor. Join two of Mount Vernon’s expert staff members for free behind-the-scenes talks on the history and evolution of the Chintz Room.
In celebration of the completed restoration of the Chintz Room, Mount Vernon is offering free talks on May 7 at 1 and 3 p.m. Thomas Reinhart, deputy director of architecture, will present the evolution of the room from 1735 through today. His talk will take you back in time, showing how the room has changed over the course of 20 generations of paint.
Amanda Isaac, associate curator at Mount Vernon, will explore the chintz revolution in Britain, the “Chintz Room” interiors of Thomas Chippendale, and how the Washington’s translated high fashion to their republican style of living.
