Abigail and John Adams were not just husband and wife; they were prolific collaborators who helped nurture the U.S. in its formative years. This unique nonfiction children’s book tells the story of one of America’s most-treasured couples alongside stunning and original illustrations.
David Bruce Smith, founder of the Grateful American Foundation, and co-founder of the Grateful American Book Prize, revealed in an interview with the Smithsonian, that he “was born loving history.”
Smith created the children’s book series to encourage young learners to understand and appreciate America’s history in an era when teaching it in the classroom is on the decline. Each book will focus on presidential and historical marriages that were partnerships.
From carefree childhoods and to years of war; to the births of their children, and the beginning of a new nation, Abigail & John looks into the unique roles the Adams’s played in the formation of America, and the contributions and sacrifices they made for the young country.
“Abigail & John is a heartwarming, yet honest account of America’s most celebrated founding couple. With charming illustrations that bring Abigail and John Adams’ partnership to life, and beautifully written text that engages equally–well when read aloud as when read silently–this highly-informative history of early America will be treasured by children and parents alike,” wrote Dr. Louise Mirrer, President & CEO of the New-York Historical Society.
In a recent interview conducted by Michael Poliakoff, president of the ACTA, [American Council of Trustees and Alumni] David Bruce Smith, and Martha Meehan-Cohen, Director of Advancement of the Supreme Court Historical Society, Smith explained the couple’s dynamic: “I would call them a powerful couple, rather than a power couple. The reason is: although they worked together, typically they weren’t in the same place at the same time.”
