David Bruce Smith, founder and president — Author and publisher David Bruce Smith is the creator of The Grateful American™ Series, an interactive multimedia program that is focused on restoring enthusiasm in American history for children — and adults. A graduate of The George Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in American Literature, and a master’s in journalism from New York University, Smith has spent decades as a real estate executive and the Editor-in-Chief/Publisher of Crystal City magazine. Smith is also the author of 11 books, including his most recent, “American Hero: John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States,” and Three Miles from Providence: A Tale of Abraham Lincoln at the Soldiers’ Home. Hope Katz Gibbs, executive producer — Journalist, publicist, author, and entrepreneur Hope is the executive director of the David Bruce Smith’s The Grateful American™ Series, a Foundation dedicated to restoring enthusiasm in American history for kids, and adults. Hope started her career as a newspaper reporter after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1986. In the years since, she has won awards for feature and column writing for articles that have appeared in The Washington Post, USA Today, The Miami Herald, Costco Connection, and dozens of other business, education, and general interest magazines, newsletters, and blogs. In 2001, Hope got into the PR business in 2001, when she put her masters degree in educational leadership from The George Washington University to work and became the director of communication for the City of Fairfax Schools in Northern VA. Soon after, her PR client list expanded to include the international futurist think tank Social Technologies, which was based in her stomping ground of Washington, DC. In 2008, Hope incorporated The Inkandescent Group, LLC, and since then has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs, educators, authors, and small-business owners increase their visibility through her PR and book publishing services. Francesca Raimond, director of digital marketing — Francesca has served as a producer and digital audio field engineer for Soundprint, a weekly documentary radio series broadcast nationwide on public radio. She has also been an on-line journalist and web producer at Discovery Channel and VH1. In 1999 she began working at Comedy Central as the web producer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In 2006 she became the Senior Director of Production, Digital Media at Comedy Central and then in 2008 she turned her attention to Comedy Central’s Jokes.com. Michael Gibbs, website designer + illustrator — Michael has been a freelance illustrator and designer since attending Pratt Institute as a photography and illustration major in the mid-70s. His award-winning artwork has appeared in Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Worth Magazine, Consumer Reports, Harvard Business Review, and publications for United Airlines, Verizon, IBM, Sears, American Airlines, CitiGroup and Oracle. He has also illustrated the covers and features of dozens of alumni magazines including Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, the University of Chicago and American University. His illustrations have been recognized by prestigious art publications such as Communication Arts, 3×3 Magazine, Print, and Spectrum. His work has also been exhibited at a variety of museums and galleries including the Society of Illustrator’s Museum of American Illustration in New York City, the Billy Shire Fine Arts Gallery in Los Angeles, and in Washington area at the Corcoran Museum of Art, the Sumner School Museum, Montgomery College Gallery and the University of Maryland Gallery. Max Kukoy, website developer — Max has been a Washington, DC-based freelance web developer/designer since 2000. He earned his master’s degree in environmental science from the University of Oklahoma in 1993, then started working in public health and environmental policy at Washington DC based non-profits. After a few years of policy work, he developed an interest in building websites and not long after launched his own small business. In the years since, Kukoy has developed hundreds of sites that range from simple database-driven sites, to complicated ones with that feature e-commerce capability. Kathleen McCarthy, copyeditor — The managing editor and senior VP of The Inkandescent Group, Kathleen has been a freelance editor and writer for more than two decades. She enjoys riding the publication arc—the beginning of every issue is a fresh start, and the end of every issue brings a completed publication. A deadline fanatic, Kathleen is zealous about the virtues of the serial comma and admires writers who can translate dense topics into artful prose. As the managing editor of Be Inkandescent magazine, Kathleen edits 25 articles per month, and also makes sure all of the Inkandescent books, newsletters, press releases, and more are eloquent, filled with content, and grammatically correct. Kathleen’s expertise is in the mental health and nonprofit field, having worked as a writer and editor for the American Psychological Association, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, and the American Society for Engineering Education. She also handles the editing, design, and layout for the monthly online newsletter of the American Mental Health Counselors Association. Past freelance clients include the Centers for Disease Control, GE Information Services, and the University of Mary Washington. Since 2009, Kathleen has been the senior vice president of InkandescentPR.com, and managing editor of BeInkandescent business magazine.
Diana L. Carswell, make-up artist + production assistant — A former make-up-artist to the White House, Diana L. Carswell has adorned the faces of US Presidents, First Ladies, Miss Americas, Celebrities, Foreign Dignitaries, and Countless Prominent Political Figures. On the political front, she has created polished looks and through make-up and wardrobe, crafted the most desirable and sellable public images. As a Fashion and Beauty Editor, Diana’s expertise and make-up graphics have appeared in Vogue, Mademoiselle, Town and Country, Ladies Home Journal, American Health, the Washington Post. Her precise copy editing expertise and extensive experience with political campaigns, media messaging, and media training have postured her well as a production assistant to ensure the most polished and favorable image is the outcome.
